The department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides state-of-the-art treatment in all fields of Orthopaedic Surgery including Trauma and Accident Surgery, Joint Replacements, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Shoulder surgery, Arthroscopy and Tumor surgery. The department had its beginning in 2000 when a unit was started by Dr.Saji P O Thomas MS Orth, MCh Orth (UK).

This was later converted to a full fledged department with two other orthopaedic surgeons joining the unit. The facilities provided in the unit have expanded steadily and today it performs more than 300 major surgeries per year. The department also performs day care surgeries for minor orthopaedic ailments.

As a center of excellence, the department treats patients from across Centeral Tranvancore as well as NRIs from Gulf,, many of whom are referred by other hospitals for second opinion or for treatment of complex trauma & other orthopaedic conditions.

Patients benefit from being treated by a team of orthopaedic surgeons, who are supported in their work by nurses, therapists and other specialist clinical staff who are trained and are experts in their particular fields of orthopaedic care.

In this modern era with high speed vehicular traffic and congested roads, the road traffic accident cases are ever increasing in number and complexity. Today WHO has identified that polytrauma has emerged as the commonest cause of death and disability in people between the age group of 5-40 years. Polytraumatised patients require a multi disciplinary approach for their management: “The Trauma Team”

The hospital houses a modern Emergency Room, with all the equipment necessary for resuscitation and advanced trauma and life support. This room is situated next to an Accident & emergency theatre. This room is equipped with continuous Oxygen supply, Resuscitation trolleys with life saving equipment including defibrillator and most important of all the trained medical and paramedical personnel.

There are five modern theatre suites in this hospital out of which one is a dedicated Orthopaedics theater. The theater is equipped with Image Intensifier, fracture table, operating microscopes, Intramedullary nailing instrumentation sets, complete AO screws and plates ( standard , small, mini fragment system, cannulated screws ), pneumatic drill/saw systems, External Fixator frames ( AO, Hoffman,Jess, Orthofix, Ilizarov ) and an array of various other instruments and implants to complete the armamentarium. The theater is centrally air-conditioned with antimicrobial filters, has laminar air flow & positive pressure maintenance system all of which help tobring down post surgical infection rates to match international standards.
