FacilitiesThe Nephrology Department of Century Hospital was one of the earliest departments dealing with this super-specialty in the Central Travancore region. Currently the following facilities are available with the Department: The department, in collaboration with the Urology Department, has applied for the licence to start Renal transplantation, and this programme is expected to start shortly. The Department is involved in the care of patients with kidney diseases and also gives full support to patients with kidney failure. The haemodialysis unit of the department has six modern computerized dialysis machines and caters to the need of the outpatient dialysis patients as also the acutely ill inpatient who requires dialysis support. The unit is equipped with modern reverse osmosis system to supply highly purified water for dialysis. The unit is staffed by highly trained and experienced personnel. Critical care Nephrology has gained prominence in recent years. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is being increasingly used in the management of unstable patients with sepsis in the Intensive care unit. CRRT in being applied in the management of critically ill patients with renal failure in this hospital. The department is well equipped for the management of snake bite from intensive care to haemodialysis support. The Department is actively involved in the management of other poisonings and drug over-dosages. This may involve either haemodialysis or haemoperfusion using an activated charcoal cartridge to adsorb the poison.
Plasmapheresis for the treatment of neurological illness like 'Guillian - Barre' syndrome and Myasthenia gravis is also being done in the department. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis or home peritoneal dialysis for chronic kidney failure patients is available at this hospital. The Department is conducting a 2 year postgraduate Diploma course in dialysis technology since 2003. |
